Georgia is not a country people think they should visit and put at the top of their travel list, but after I visited here on a recent trip for a conference, I believe it should be right up there on everyone’s list. Here are the top five reasons why Georgia needs to be on your bucket list.
Georgia is located in the Caucasus region of the world, nestled between the Black Sea and the mountains to the north (the Caucasus Mountains). It is a country often overlooked on the world travel map.
My recent visit at the beginning of February for a conference revealed a country so unique and interesting that it compelled me to share why this country deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.
Here are five reasons that make Georgia an unmissable destination and one you should add to your world bucket list!
5. Affordability – the country is cheap as chips!
One of the most pleasant surprises about this country is the affordability of everything you’d want to spend your money on!
Whether you’re sipping on a glass of wine or hopping into a taxi, the costs here are low when compared to most Western European countries!
The affordability allows you to experience everything you want without worrying about going over budget! Georgia is where your buck will go much further, making every moment spent here feel like a bargain! Aside from Georgia, here are the top ten cheapest European city breaks in 2024.
4. A foodie’s paradise – unique and delicious food for all tastes!
The Georgian cuisine is a delicious testimony to the country’s position at the crossroads of East and West. The food here is a fantastic mix, drawing influences from both sides to create something uniquely Georgian.
Every dish is a story of mixture and innovation, from the beautiful, delicious, pillow-soft Khinkali (Georgian dumplings) to the rich and savoury Khachapuri (cheese bread).
Dining in Georgia is a real cultural experience. It is an exploration of flavours and recipes passed down through generations, yet always open to reinterpretation (every restaurant seemed to have a slightly different way of cooking things).
3. A great place to ski – less crowds and cheaper than popular ski regions!
Georgia needs to be on your bucket list, especially if you love skiing and winter sports! The Gudauri region, in particular, boasts a fantastic ski resort catering to beginners and seasoned skiers.
I enjoyed learning to Ski in Gudauri, and the whole experience will live with me forever. I stayed at The Loft Hotel (which I’d highly recommend). It was just off the main beginner slope.
The slopes here offer a variety of challenges, while the surrounding landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop. Skiing here is also massively cheaper than in Western Europe or America!
Georgia is a gateway to winter adventures, from snowboarding to snowshoeing, making it a perfect destination for winter sports!
2. A country that loves wine – Georgia is possibly the birthplace of wine!
Another reason why Georgia needs to be on your bucket list is their wine! Georgia’s wine-making history stretches back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world!
The country is home to unique grape varieties and ancient wine-making techniques. The result is a range of wines that are as diverse as they are flavourful, embodying the soul of the Georgian landscape and its people.
Top tip: some Georgian wines are very sweet, so if you try one and don’t like it, ask for a dry red or white wine next time you order it!
Aside from beautiful wine glasses in restaurants, you can visit vineyards and tasting rooms to connect with and understand the wine
1. It has UNESCO World Heritage Sites – sites for any bucket list!
Georgia, an important location on the Silk Road, has a rich history and cultural significance worldwide. Indeed, there are UNESCO World Heritage Sites to be found here.
These sites are not just markers of historical importance; they are important for understanding human civilisation, art, and architecture. They have stood the test of time.
From the ancient city of Mtskheta with its historic churches to the mountainous region of Upper Svaneti, each UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into the soul of Georgia.
